10 Things You Should Know About Fruhlein

By Yan • Jul 31st, 2007 • Category: 10 Things

Baby FruhleinFruhlein - or Baby, as everyone in the family calls her - is sort of the fourth of the infamous “tres marias”. Born to the youngest sister of my dad, whose nomadic existence spanned different corners of the world in pursuit of love and meaning, Fruhlein was dumped on our doorstep at a very young age. As fate would have it, she unwittingly became my living, breathing baby doll. The poor kid listened to me rant about the trivial tragedies of adolescence, and she has been scarred ever since. I blame myself for her artistic flair and her melodramatic outbursts, but I dare not take credit for the resilience with which she lives her life. That sort of strength, so rare in our family, can only come from some wayward chromosome in our gene pool. Some would even call it a mutation. I, on the other hand, proudly label “the Fruhlein phenomenon” a precious and utterly divine miracle.

10 Things You Need to Know About Fruhlein

my two babies

  1. Her first fashion statement was a neon green short, short skirt that showed off her butt cheeks. She accessorized with a pink skipping rope, which she used to her full advantage - skipping, hopping, jumping, skirt a-flying, butt cheeks a-smiling.
  2. She stole her first kiss at the ripe old age of 4. His name was John John.
  3. At 11 years old, she asked the inevitable birds-and-bees question, albeit with a twist. And I quote: “Ate, what’s an orgasm?”
  4. At 16, she can teach me a thing or two about orgasms and what not.
  5. She does a mean cartwheel. Imagine that green skirt and a graceful cartwheel execution. Perfect combination, huh?
  6. She can shed a tear at the slightest provocation. She makes crying look like an art form, too.
  7. She was a pseudo-professional singer in another lifetime. God knows why she traded the limelight for a quiet life behind a computer.
  8. In grade school, she had a Paolo. In high school, she had another Paolo. Wanna bet she’d get a new Paolo in college, too?
  9. She’s a goth-dressing rocker chick who reminds me of Death. Not the scythe-wielding one, no. The Gaiman one, stupid! But secretly, she’s just a sweet, mushy girl who loves all things frilly. Her secret is safe with me, by the way. *wink*
  10. Her formative years could have ended in tragedy. But she used it as an opportunity to grow, to evolve, to become the glorious butterfly that she is now. It’s all a matter of attitude, people. And our little baby Fruhlein has lots and lots of it.

  1. I have to say that Ta Yang’s influence has a lot to do with Baby’s strength of character. It’s really not fair to say that Babe’s resilience is uncharacteristic of our gene pool, because we have so many strong women in our family. Just take a look at the living matriarch in Moalboal. :D

  2. My apologies. Somehow, I’ve always figured that my strength came from my Mom’s side of the family - I mean look at my Mom. And just look at the extraordinary life of my late Lola Pilar.

But on second thought, the “superwoman” gene is dominant in both sides of my family.

    hah! no wonder.

  3. I can’t help but laugh at this. Everything is true except 3 & 4. It’s easier for me to just ignore them.

Wow Yan, I forgot about the green short skirt that she didn’t want to be washed. As much as I wanted to, I can not take credit of how she becomes. She grew up on her own having parents who are buluyagon hahaha… she’s forced to grow up. We’ve got the genes and she is exposed to the situation. Nature and Nurture… she is hybrid.

Bitaw one reason could be the self-help books that I used to read and she browsed. She read them as early as 8yrs old and before she even comprehends, she is already exposed to them. SO maybe it is stuck in her subconscious.

Xyzha is a very special kid in her own simple way. Can’t wait to read it.

    Great job Yan!

  4. Ta Yang: You should ignore 3 & 4. I initially wrote this without any intention of sharing this with the family, but it’s just too juicy to not send, you know. I couldn’t resist. Hehehe.

I agree. Baby grew up on her own. But she also had the love and support of a wonderful mom (you), an iron-willed surrogate (my mom), and three doting sisters (us tres marias). Still, other kids have so much more, and yet they can’t seem to get past smaller obstacles. Your daughter really is one of a kind. But then again, you already know that, don’t you? :)

  5. And for the record, I am not in pursuit of love and meaning. Just money really but hoping love and meaning comes with it.. bwahahahah

  6. bwahahahha. :D good plan, good plan.

And for the record, no. 3 really did happen, you know. Ask your daughter.

As for no. 4, it’s purely speculation on my part. She neither denied nor confirmed it, so one wonders…
