Top 20 Schools in the Philippines
By Yan • Sep 26th, 2007 • Category: Random TidbitsI just received the Top 20 Schools in the Philippines report through my college org’s egroup (thanks, Jo!).
Of course, my alma mater, the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman), tops the list yet again.
In fact, UP seems to have monopolized the top three spots, with UP Los Banos and UP Manila trailing behind at #2 and #3, respectively.
Surprisingly, Ateneo University campuses only ranked #5 (Ateneo de Davao), #6 (Ateneo de Manila), and #12 (Xavier). Surprising because I have such a high regard for Ateneo. Apparently, however, Silliman University’s performance has surpassed that of Ateneo’s in the past 10 years (that is, if this list is an accurate assessment). I love the artsy-fartsy city of Dumaguete, so let me be the first to say, “Hurray, Silliman!”
A newcomer in this list is Urios College (#14). According to the email I got (forwarded from a Rhocsan thread), Urios made waves only after a certain UP Diliman alumnus, Ariel Tagapolot, joined the faculty as the Dean of the College of Engineering. The implication being, UP Diliman should take credit for Urios’ success? 
While I’m pretty sure that Mr. Tagapolot is a brilliant dean and has probably done wonders for Urios, I seriously doubt that he’s solely responsible for its success. Nice try, Rhocsans. And good job, Urios. Welcome to the club. 
Beating a more established (and certainly wealthier) school like De La Salle University is a huge feat, indeed. Hats off to you. And to you, too, Mr. Tagapolot. 
And of course, kudos to all of us UP Diliman graduates! Please repost this in your blog and help spread the word. 
This is a result of the study conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), based on the average passing in the BOARD EXAMINATIONS OF ALL COURSES of all universities and colleges in the Philippines. This study is concluded every 10 years. Eleven schools come from Luzon, two from the Visayas and seven from Mindanao.

Well at least The Ateneos managed to rank higher than their arch rival… I’m not from Silliman but my parents and everyone else in the family is from that school… and I’m very happy that it ranked 4th (after 3 consecutive UP places)

5 or so years after I graduated from college, I realized that one’s university doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Yes, I’m still proud to be a UP Diliman product. But it doesn’t make me better than anyone else. In the grand scheme of things, what matters is your skill, passion, and resilience.

it doesn’t really matter kung saang skul ka galing. hindi naman gumradweyt si henry sy sa ano mang college nung itinayo niya ang sm. besides, we go to college naman not to become more intelligent, but to make better decisions in life. i am a graduate from the university of caloocan city and i am now the system analyst of malacañang, and i’m only 24 years old. my point is that “man makes himself”. it does not depend on what school he graduated from for him to get somewhere. once you graduate halos patas- patas na lang kayo,and you will realize that it’s not really about the school, it’s actually about the person.
hey guyz particularly to those na hindi nkasali sa top 20 try hard pa i think mga nsa top deserves it and one more thing UAAP AND NCAA IS SUCH BIAS A BASIS OF TOP UNIVERSITIES!!!! ( what is the relevance of sports in academic performance? pls think first b4 posting crap stuffs

Since this site is intended primarily as a forum for discussing which schools should be included among the Top Ten Universities in our beloved poor and corruption-ridden Philippines, here’s my personal list with a little explanation concerning each personal choice and this list may probably change next year:
1) UP Diliman and Manila combined (One is incomplete without the other because UP Diliman’s Law program is only a consistent Number 3 in Bar Exam passing rate next to Ateneo de Manila (#1) and San Beda (#2); UP Manila remains Number 1 in Medicine passing percentage but is only next to UST Medicine (#1) in terms of the number of Top Ten top notchers; other UP Campuses are considered second-rate schools and are comparable only to their regional competitors, no wonder students and faculty members of UP Manila and Diliman do not regard them highly; the main weakness is lack of facility and very lax retention policy, i.e., it does not “kick out” students who have already long over-stayed in the campus)
2) Ateneo de Manila (the most improving school in the Philippines in terms of both international survey and local prestige; this might even overtake UP in next year’s THES-QS survey because it is the only Philippine school whose prestige continues to improve; while UP went down almost 100 notches, AdMU went up more than 30 notches; this school remains the number 1 choice of Fil-Foreigners and rich Filipinos who obviously have more money and international competence compared to their local counterparts; it has the highest number of international students and international faculty from the Western countries; the only negative aspect is its lack of academic programs like engineering and accountancy)
3) De La Salle U Manila (The perpetual #3 overall choice of both intellectuals and financially capable students except for medical courses; has the 2nd biggest number of regional academic linkages; has the second biggest number of graduate degree programs (next only to UP); has the second-best facilities next only to its sister College of Saint Benilde; it attracts former most prominent UP professors because it provides the highest salary level among all schools in the Philippines; some weaknesses include accepting academically lousy athletes, and lesser scholarship grants)
4) University of Santo Tomas (The usual #4 overall in the Philippines and usually the Second Choice for the Medical-inclined students and middle class intellectuals; It produces the second biggest number of intellectuals in the country and maintains an excellent reputation abroad as a pontifical university; has graduated the most excellent luminaries in the fields of medicine and nursing especially in the United States; reputed as the biggest Catholic university in the world in terms of student enrolment; the only negative aspect is their office workers’ very laidback work attitude which discourages some alumni to recommend the school to their friends coupled with the school’s very traditional approach to learning)
You may add other schools to my list
Who knows about Silliman? Who knows about Fr Urios? Tell that to the people of Forbes and Ayala Alabang and they would say there are only 4 schools, prestigious schools at that, in the Philippines.
Out of the 24 senators and our past presidents and vice-presidents, no one is coming from Silliman or Urios. Who among the supreme court justices are coming from these schools? No one. Out of all the presidents of our top 20 corporations, all of them are coming from the Big 4.
In short, the person who did the survey is either joking or just plainly an idiot or stupid hehehe!

Only idiots would believe that PUP is better than DLSU. I don’t have relatives in DLSU because everyone in my family studied in UP or Ateneo and some of us got graduate degrees in Stanford, Yale and UC Berkeley but I believe that DLSU is the perpetual number 3 followed by UST. No one can refute that.

UP and Ateneo are indeed the best in the country BUT schools from the visayas and mindanao are not lagging far behind. Remember Karla, you are from UP, and that even among UP students there is a distinction. I am proud of UP Nating Mahal…Heck, I literally shed blood for UP…but the other schools have all the right to be included in the list. I graduated high school from Mindanao State Univ-IIT (TOP8), grade school from La Salle…and I’ve known Silliman all my life…I guess Karla that I have more right than you to judge the standards of these schools.
UP always tells us that we are the best in the country, but remember according to President Nemenzo “we are part of the country’s problem…and part of the solution”…you can’t judge a person by his/her school. Suffice to say, I graduated among the top 10% in UP-Dilliman with the LEAST amount of effort…so that means UP education was a breeze for me…but then again, going to UP was my decision. I also passed top 9 during the MSU SASE and could have enrolled there with all the benefits.(scolarships and such)..so think about it, If I enrolled in MSU-IIT and graduated there and you a UP graduate, does that make you ultimately better than me?
Think again.
To all the students out there..let us do our best to improve our lives by studying hard!

Don’t understimate FSUU, formerly called Urios College.. it’s a small school in Butuan but competitive in boarn examinations.. TOP20 is conducted by PRC and CHED so Urios College, Fr, Saturnino Urios University, must have gain respect for making in the list.. And will make sure we can do it in the next set of TOP20..

Nadisappoint ako na merong tiga UP na ganan magisip. You knw karla, your way of thinking is very insulting. Why are you considering other UP campuses as second-rate schools? Para tuloy tinitingnan mo ang mga UP campuses as SEPARATE SCHOOLS, not as UNITS WITHIN A SYSTEM. Dont you know that UP is a SYSTEM? Ibig sabihin we are working as ONE. So why compare kung iisa lang tayo diba? UP is composed of units working hand in hand to achieve a common goal. Interdependent ang bawat unit sa isa’t isa. UP units within the system was created in a manner that each unit would specialize in a certain field of human knowledge, i.e. UPLB in agriculture,forestry and other related sciences; UP Manila in health sciences; UP Visayas in fisheries/aquaculture, etc. Every campus has its specialties noh kaya hindi ka dapat nagkukumpara ng ganan. Kung magcocompare man, try to express it in a nice way na hindi offending sa iba..Nilait mo na ibang UP campus lalo na ung ibang univ/schools. Maxado ka mapagmataas, God bless na lang sayo.

And for your info, companies do look at those CHED and PRC surveys and it is sometimes their basis for their recruitment.

Bicol University is always underrated…However inspite of it, BU produces a board placer in engineering, education and nursing……I think it performs far more better than Adamson University and other overrated university there in NCR.

Im saddened by the news that UP’s ranking from among the top 500 schools in the world slid from 299 to 398 while Ateneo ranked 451. De La Salle and UST are booted out from the list, ranked 519 and 535 respectively. The other prominent universities in the country are nowhere to be found in the list of London Times Higher Education Supplement. The schools of the neighboring ASEAN countries fared better than ours. Most schools focused on research and development in which we lagged behind. I remember in 2005 that a Filipino won the best world challenge project, the coconet. This only reveals that we have the wits to surpass other countries achievements yet we only lack the funding. Anyway, our consolation is that despite the dismal performance of our schools, yet we manage to export our labor because we have the advantage over the others. OFWs remittances is now emerging the goldmine for our country that helped solved ailing economy.

im not surprised that SLU is still in the top schools in the philippies. Setting aside the differences we the “expats ” dont care much about the schools but instead we help fellow pinoys to excell in our own choosen careers because if we dont, Indians, pakistanis, arabs and other nationalities will simply overtake us as preferred employees in the middle east. our advantage is the technical knowhow and the capacity to apply what we have learned in the school any school for that matter, listed or not listed in top schools in the phil. ei guys.. taga.Silliman ni bai… well, i was a bit shocked knowing Silliman claims the number 4 spot sa top performing schools. and i guess most of the students do feel the same way too. well, we sillimanians assume that lots of schools (especially those of the NCR) are way better than us. i could say that we keep always keep our feet on the ground and make sure that all glory and honor still goes to Him.
i’m an accountancy student and most of the board passers i talked with would say that the board exam per se is not as difficult as those exams we usually have in our school. they say that lots of factors affect their performance in the board exam: homesickness, lacking of financial support to name a few. our mentor who was working in SGV would say that what makes Sillimanians stand out among other students, even those from intimidating schools like UP, Ateneo, and La Salle is the fact that the’re humble. Sillimanians don’t refuse when given menial tasks such as photocopying in the basement and all, those tasks that students from other school feel they don’t deserve doing, saying that they’re not sent to school in order to do such tasks.
Silliman is not as fame-hungry as other schools especially those in ncr. but one thing for sure is that we always make sure that excellence and character always go together.

Im just proud of my alma matter Saint Louis University for being included in the list. There was a time when German professors are handling electronics subjects and instructors who went to Belgium to complete their masteral degrees and came back to teach engineering subjects. Those were the days when SLU is very good in ECE. I hope the school is still sending instructors to further their studies in europe for the benefit of the students and the generations to come. What is really the best gauge to determine the performance of a university? Is it facilities? Amount of money received in grants? Number of alumni who go on to become presidents/senators/congressmen?
While there are any number of criteria to consider in ranking any group of schools, a survey by Philippine Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) assessed university performance by looking at graduates of the same programs.
The joint study, published in 2005, looked into the performance of Philippine universities in the various national board examinations. The study ranked the universities based on the average passing in the national board examinations of all courses from 1999 to 2005.

I have very high respect for UP D. Every educated Filipino should expect UP to top all board examinations simply because UP selects the best students, besides the funding from the national treasury. Top notched professors also teach in UP’s halls. And guess what? Sillimanians taught, and some are still teaching, in her halls too. You may wonder why UP’s academic leaders hire them to mold you. They say, “only the best teach in UP” and why not, UP carries the name of our country.
Just a bit of information. Let’s take the very popular and most commercialized course here in Metro Manila, ‘BSNursing”. You may wish to know how Silliman University performed in its licensure examinations since 1953 and learn that it maintained a hundred percent (100%) passing rate until 2006 where one candidate failed, in 2007 she obtained 100% passing rate again.
I am from Silliman and we celebrate “via veritas vita.” Certainly, we are not number one, but we deserve to be consistently in that list. Ask PRC or CHED.
By the way, you owe the UP community an apology.

Just to correct the misconception advertised by ABCDE. If you have studied at MSU-IIT how come you made bad comments on your alma mater? My colleagues are Lab Technicians and they strongly denied using upper part of mineral water bottle as funnel. MSU System receives billions of pesos of budget every year. This calls for another senate investigation in aid of legislation. he.he.he Also, the rankings made by CHED is not based on funnels used in the lab but the results of the board exams and the number of CODs and COEs. If your school is using the most sophisticated and advanced funnel how come your school did not fare well in the world rankings. My conclusion is that this abcde is probably only making some assumptions. He did not study at MSU-IIT and probably he is from Manila. In my 50 years of living in the Philippines I have seen racist and those people who regard highly of their tribes. God hates racist as well as chauvinists and bigots. I hope abcde realized this.

i am a sillimanian…study in silliman and you’ll surely feel the difference…it should not be surprising that UP tops among all schools in the philippines…to note, it is an institution that serves as an epitome of true filipino education….should UP fall next to any educational institution in the entire philippines, it would be an insult to the our nation…UP belongs to every filipino…but UP has proved it for decades and no one could possibly defy that…we must be thankful that UP has performed at its best and proved its worth to be called the UP.likewise, Silliman University has safeguarded academic excellence and has preserved it much longer than UP, since it was founded in 1901…let us not step on each others shoulders just to reach the top and receive all the praises…we are products of the best schools in the country.let us live what we learned in our respective alma mater and honor whatever the statistics show…UP ranks first and Silliman comes next and so on…if you want to verify things out, visit the CHED…properly inquire and be informed…lets us not debate of which among the top schools deserve to be at the top, rather, let us look at each of the top schools as a pillar of excellence in education in the phil.

regarding po sa mga constituent na naghahanap ng ranking ng university nila base sa mga courses na inio-offer ng alma matter nyo, you can check it naman pag lumabas na ang result ng board exam……
i think general ang ginawa paga-aral ng PRC at CHED dito kung pano ira-rank ang mga universities dito satin, mahirap kc kung ibe-base nila sa mga courses offered na nagta-take ng licensure examinations…..
and besides makikita naman ang ranking ng mga university base sa performance ng kanilang mga students pag lumabas ang results ng board exams…..
by the way congrats po sa lahat, kahit bumaba ang ranking ng aking mahal na alma matter,

The data that THES- QY (worldwide rankings) used to rank UP was not updated. they used the data they got last year. thus, they were not able to include this year’s development in the UP system.
let us not forget that UP has always been consistent in producing the best in the country, not only academically that it excels but also in the field of research and technology. UP professors do not only teach inside the classroom, they also do field work and etension researches.
i’m happy that UP is still being recognized as the best. Hail to 100 years of excellence! UP ang Galing Mo!
