Dark Mimbo Design Ideas
By Yan • Jan 23rd, 2008 • Category: Inanities, Wordpress ThemesI had the pleasure of getting to know a blogger named Nazu lately, who paid me the highest compliment by copying the css of my recent Mimbo customization.
I had mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I was really flattered that someone liked my design well enough to copy it. On the other hand, I’ve always felt pretty strong about retaining my own “unique blog identity”. The latter prevailed. I asked Nazu to change his css, and he was kind enough to comply. (Really appreciate it, Nazu.)
Since Nazu seemed to like my dark colors, I came up with a couple of dark Mimbo design ideas for him. Or for anyone else who might be interested. I tried to do more than 2, but I ran out of time. I will try to create more, if my schedule permits.
Bear in mind that these are just rough drafts, and I don’t really have time to tweak these to perfection. This is just a starting point for anyone who wants to customize their own Mimbo layout. Feel free to use these ideas in whatever way.
Unfortunately, I currently don’t have the time to translate these to css. You’d have to do that on your own or hire someone who can.

lovrosh, what’s a plagiaters? if you mean plagiarist, the answer is no. nazu was kind enough to ask for my permission first. i said yes. we had some sort of misunderstanding. long story.
mimbo is by darren hoyt. it’s a free theme for public use, so go ahead. you’d love it as much as i do.

Hi Yan, just wanted to congratulate you on your excellent use of Darren Hoyt’s free ‘Mimbo’ WordPress them. I am also thinking of adapting this theme for use on the blog for my Japanese pop-culture site, Jpopexpress.com, and came across your site after checking some examples from Darren’s site. I must say I think yours is the best! Great job!
Your version has great legibility, I like the ‘More from this Category,’ the Recent Comments with thumbnails, and great overall job with the blackground. Keep up the nice work!

Once more, now i’m using “polaroid” (http://www.adii.co.za/) as my theme, but i don’t see the trick to change header image, background image and the color or image in left-side text and the right-side text on polaroids theme.

Oh, hmm, I think I understand. Some themes call the_excerpt instead of the_content(_’read more’). You have to set an optional excerpt.
Darren Hoyt has a great tutorial about the optional excerpt. Please read it for detailed instructions.
Anyway, your theme looks great now. You should stick with it.

I’m a bit of an F1 fan myself. Before real life intruded, my boyfriend and I used to spend our Sundays rooting for Barrichello (go, Rubinho!) and Schumi. Good times, good times. But then we became very busy with work, and Sundays became a chance to sleep in and recuperate from the bustle of our week days. We haven’t been keeping track since Rubens quit Ferrari and Schumi retired. I wonder how Kimi’s doing, though.
Been really out of touch with the Formula One world. I’ll read through your blog one of these days to see what I’ve missed.

Hi yan, i come to you to present my website who is based on your css work and your 2 layouts of this post ! I love your black style and like you said, the begining of copy/inspiration is the begining of glory !

and i planned to get my own blog identity.I finish my blog the last week, and i just need a base to start my modifications to get the results of your 2 ideas.
At the moment, I worked a lot on the integration of different plugins based on javascript and it takes me some times. But, i give you the assurance that i not keep my css like your own. about wordpress, the bases of the plate-forme is quite easy to improve, but i come to certain limit when i try to get some ajax and flash in there
